Marriott Pushes Diversity Among Franchisees

Marriott seems serious about pushing a more diverse face. Those initiatives are supported by their top man, CEO Bill Marriott.

Says Mr. Marriott, "Our company and industry are made up of diverse people and backgrounds ... from our associates and customers to business partners. We want to reflect that diversity on every level and in all facets of our business."

Marriott isn't just talking the talk but seems to be walking the walk. In 2004, the company ranked 24th among the Top 50 Companies for Diversity compiled by DiversityInc. There's more:

  • According to one report, about 15% of Marriott's franchisees are operated or under development by women and minorities.
  • 400 hotels opened or soon to be opened that are owned or managed by minorities or women
  • A $100,000 grant to the Hispanic Hotel Ownership Association (HHOA) to help build relationships with Hispanic hotel owners
  • RLJ Development, LLC, a wholly-owned African-American hotel ownership company became one of the company's largest owners with the acquisition of 90 Marriott hotels.
