The Upcoming Boomer Boom
The first wave of America's 78 million baby boomers is barely 60 days away from hitting the big six-oh. In a little over three years, they'll be over 63 and retiring (see video). The greying of America means more retirees and a shrinking work force. Industry analysts say large-cap pharmaceuticals, hotel-resort chains and home builders have a chance to be big winners in the next five years. According to Forbes, this is what the shift in demographics mean:
- Big pharmaceuticals are primed for a decade or more of growth as boomers age. Look at franchises like GNC, Comfort Keepers, Right at Home and other senior health care for the real long-term. There should be many opportunities for franchisors who focus on the health needs of the boom in population of senior citizens.
- Skiing, rock climbing and hang gliding are quickly being replaced by "edu-tainment" trips in which vacations are learning and cultural experiences. Travel related franchises will see an impact from this trend.
- The new elderly will want to downsize their homes and more will choose to stay closer to home and family, just outside of city centers. Look at the traditional real estate firms such as Coldwell Banker, Century 21 and Re/Max.
