60 Minutes on Counting Calories

New York City Wants National Chains That Publish Nutrition Information To Be Required To Now Post It on Their Menu Boards

New York, N.Y. (Blue MauMau) - Health officials from across the country want to see restaurant chains like Wendy's, KFC, Subway, Ruby Tuesday's and others display calories on menu boards. Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes talks about how restaurants are exempt from listing nutrition information on their menu boards and the rising tide of those who want to change this.

But the industry feels it is being picked on, since those good citizen companies who publish caloric information somewhere, such as on-line, are the only ones that will be required to post it on their menus. Calorie-rich local Chinese restaurants, French bistros and the like who have not made available such information will not be affected.

And then as can be seen in the photo above, how do you list all the ways that Americans love to customize their fast food meals? That would add incredible complexity to already full menu boards. (Click here or photo to see 60 Minutes (12:16) video via CBS.)
