Marketing Professor Joins Dunkin Franchisee Association Board

Bellingham, MA (Blue MauMau) —The DD Independent Franchise Owners Group, the largest association of Dunkin' Donuts franchise owners, has appointed Professor Patrick Kaufmann, a marketing professor of Boston University, to its Board of Directors.

Kaufmann holds a BA in Economics from Georgetown University, a JD from Boston College Law School, an MBA from Wharton, and a Ph.D. in Marketing from Northwestern University.  Prior to joining Boston University, he was on the faculty of the Harvard Business School and Georgia State University, and practiced law in Boston.

Speaking of his appointment, Kaufmann stated, "I look forward to assisting the DDIFO Board in its efforts to help franchisees operate profitably in this difficult economic environment."

Kevin McCarthy, the Chairman of the Board of the DDIFO, echoes Professor Kaufmann's comments, "Pat's impressive professional background, combined with his collaborative and creative business style, makes for an excellent strategic fit with both the mission and franchisee membership of DDIFO".

Pardon me for asking...

From what I understand the DDIFO has a franchise atty., a CPA, a franchise association exec, a banker, an investment banker, and now a college prof. on their board. Pardon me for asking, but aren't they missing some current f'ees or at least a former f'ee, or two?

Regarding current franchisees on the board, remember when Quiznos became upset at the Toasted Subs Franchisee Association for posting a suicide note and terminated its franchisee leaders?

Regarding former franchisees being on the board, it is indeed interesting how DDIFO seems to be moving away from this. VERY INTERESTING.

Speaking of which, as small organizations mature, they tend to grow away from directors with operational expertise. I also found this interesting quote in consulting small businesses on the make-up of their board:

"Ideally, members of the board should have backgrounds and contacts that differ from - but complement - the background of the officers of the company..."

Franchisees may want to have their officer, the president, as a current franchisee, but there are circumstances in which that may be a liability.
