Culver's is ranked #3 in ice cream/custard

NEW YORK - What fast-food and full-service chains do consumers think have the best tasting burgers, chicken, coffee and value? Over 6,000 fast-food fans weighed in on the chains that are at the top of their mind and their visits at the latest Zagat Fast Food Survey.

The fast-food survey is based on 6,107 respondents who evaluated 103 chains nationwide. The typical respondent eats at a chain restaurant 11 times per month on average. They  rated each chain's food, facilities, and service on a 30-point scale.

"These chains offer a lot of value to diners, and in the current economic times that's more important than ever," said Tim Zagat, CEO of Zagat Survey. "Given the large number of such chains, even the most avid fast-food aficionado may need help in figuring out what's best."

These are some of the top chains with franchised outlets.

  • #1 Most popular fast food, Panera Bread
  • #1 Most popular mega chain, Subway
  • #2 Most popular quick refreshment, Dunkin’ Donuts (Starbucks was #1)
  • #1 Best value of fast foods, McDonald’s
  • #1 Best burger of full-service chains, Red Robin
  • #2 Top facilities among large chains, Zaxby’s

The big downward mover was Quiznos, a sub chain of some 4,000-plus franchises whose sandwiches and service appeared in past top lists but does not appear in this year's top chains. Another subway sandwich provider, Subway, scored in several categories — #2 in top food, #3 in facilities and #1 top service.

Special mention should go to tiny Wisconsin-based Culver’s Frozen Custard and Butterburgers. The chain of some 400 or so franchises apparently is highly regarded. Consumers across the country ranked it #5 in best fried chicken and #3 in the top ice cream/custard category.
