87-Unit Burger King Franchisee Files for Bankruptcy

An 87-unit Burger King franchisee, Duke and King Acquisition Corp., based in Burnsville, Minnesota, has filed for bankruptcy and is currently seeking buyers. The Midwest company, which had 92 locations earlier this month, has since closed five of them. Its remaining restaurants are in Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Wisconsin.

In explaining its problems, D&K cited revenue shortfalls and a “constant drain” of capital expenditures ordered by its parent company, Burger King Corp.

The $1 double cheeseburger that corporate mandated its franchisees sell at a loss was specifically mentioned in court documents as a contributing factor to the franchisee's financial woes.
