Pepto-Bismal Promises Relief to Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contestants

CONEY ISLAND, N.Y. — For today's contestants of the annual Nathan's hot dog eating contest, sayonara indigestion, hello pink juice. Proctor & Gamble and Major League Eating have come to save the day, announcing that Pepto-Bismol will be the stomach remedy sponsor of the annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.

That's good because it has been sorely needed.

George Shea, MLE president and emcee of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest said, "many people have often asked if the competitors experience stomach upsets and whether they use Pepto-Bismol. Nearly every eater does, and so for us, this sponsorship was a natural fit."

"I often feel nauseous or have indigestion when I overeat, let alone when I eat 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes." said Joey Chestnut, current reigning champion of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. "It's great Pepto-Bismol has us covered as the new official stomach remedy of the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest."

Coney Island, New York

Last year Joey Chestnut won the coveted Mustard Belt title by scarfing down 68 hot dogs and hot dog buns in 10 minutes. Japanese rival Takeru Kobayashi downed three and a half dogs less to win second place. Kobayashi, a superstar among eaters, may sit this year's competition out because Major League Eating's contract would prohibit him from competing in other eating contests not sanctioned by MLE.

But for those in today's competition, who will down dozens of dogs to the extent that their stomachs may look more like a pregnant woman in her third trimester, Proctor & Gamble, the makers of the stomach-soothing Pepto-Bismal, think the sponsorship is a natural fit. Colleen Jay, Vice President of P&G Personal Healthcare, declares, "We wanted to show that whether you've gone a little overboard on your favorite food or eaten one too many hot dogs at your backyard BBQ this summer, turn to Pepto-Bismol"

The Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is where winners from regional competition across the country vie for a spot at Coney Island to win the honor of being the world's top glutton and to receive Nathan's Mustard Belt.

The final face-off is set to take place at high noon today. It can be viewed live on ESPN television channel, and ESPN3.com to those that have an affiliated cable carrier.
