Colonel Sanders Visit Lays Egg at U.N.
Yum! Brands’ KFC sought some publicity for its new grilled chicken line at the United Nations last week, leaving U.N. officials sputtering with embarrassment and seeking damage control.
Actor Robert Thompson, dressed as Colonel Harland Sanders, was with a group of pushcarts in a park across from U.N. headquarters giving out free lunches of “UNfried” chicken to U.N. staffers to promote KFC's "KGC" (Kentucky Grilled Chicken) "grilled nation" chicken line. Sometime during the giveaway, “Colonel Sanders” left the pushcarts, passed through U.N. security and entered U.N. headquarters. Looking every inch the Colonel, with his familiar beard, white suit and strolling cane, he was seen enjoying a VIP tour with two U.N. armed security officers. He met and was photographed shaking hands with General Assembly president Ali Treki of Libya, made a stop at the General Assembly podium (normally used by presidents and monarchy) and entered a second floor area reserved for diplomats. Other security guards, spotting him on monitors, scrambled to figure out why the Colonel was in areas off the beaten tourist tour path. He was eventually escorted from the building.
"It should not have happened — that I will stress, and very strongly," U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas said.
