Credit Card Hacking Ringleader Gets 20 Years

A restaurant credit card hacker, Albert Gozalez, 28, who federal officials say headed the largest hacking and identity theft ring ever prosecuted by the U.S. government, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Companies whose customers’ credit and debit card information was accessed by the ring members include Dave & Buster’s, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, OfficeMax, 7-Eleven, Hannaford Brothers and the TJX Cos.

Separately, the Federal Trade Commission said that one of the targeted companies, Dave & Buster’s, will be subject to closer scrutiny for 20 years. The FTC has charged that the company left its customers’ credit and debit card information vulnerable to hacking, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges.
