Economic Shock Gives Boost to Coupon Firms
Florida coupon franchisor Valpak discusses with CNN how coupon cutting, introduced by product franchisor Coca-Cola over a century ago, is becoming popular again. The increased use of coupons coincides with the rising price of consumer goods and the prospects of recession.
Florida-based Valpak, whose signature blue envelopes land in about 45 million homes each year, has seen use of its coupons increase 8 percent since last year for products such as groceries, take-out food, home improvement products and specialty retail.
"Coupons motivate customers when they're looking at different stores that offer the same goods. They're more likely to go with a store that offers coupons," Valpak spokeswoman Marsha Strickhouser said.
Compare the 8 percent rise with the numbers from Charles Brown, co-chair of the Promotion Marketing Association's Coupon Council. "Couponing," as Brown calls it, has risen in dollar stores and convenience marts by 14 percent since last year, even as the use of coupons as a marketing tool has declined in packaged goods.
Coupon franchises are not alone in claiming that their products have a negative relationship with the economy. That is to say when the economy goes down these franchises boom. Cartridge World, a refilling service for ink cartridges, expects sales to increase as well when the economy takes a dive.

I would strongly suspect
I would strongly suspect that the independent adjustor franchisees would do well; I know there is a correlation between alleged auto thefts, business, and home owner arsons associated with sudden economic downturns. For analogous reasons I would think fire restoration companies would do well - so perhaps Service Master and ServPro.
I would also think the PayDay loan stores might do well and the franchised pawnshops as well as low end liqour stores.

Sin products should get a boost
Franchises that predominately sell sin products are expected to get a boost as well, although I haven't seen any stats on this so it could be just a persuasive myth.
Can anyone think of franchises with primarily sin products? I'll start the discussion going with this franchisor:
Adam & Eve, adult entertainment
Custom Blends Farm Fresh Tobacco
7 Valleys Custom Blends specializes in making your own cigarettes at home.
Saves the customers up to 70% and they specialize in all natural bulk tobacco. The customers buy their tobacco by the pound and a machine. Then the customer goes home and makes a better cigarette at home than they can buy in a store.
They have 3 franchisees and 1 company owned all in PA.
They've been in business since 1993 but have only been franchising for a couple of years.
hey and the coffee is good
