Franchise Leadership: Leading Tribes

University of Southern California professor and leadership guru David Logan speaks about five natural kinds of tribes and how to lead those different tribal stages to the next level.

What sort of tribe do your fellow franchisees naturally and collectively tend to?

Whatever it is, Logan says that great leaders need the ability to relate and talk to all tribal stages while nudging the tribe as a whole to the next level. As an example, he cites how America's Founding Fathers in the Declaration of Independence addressed all tribal stages, which included lofty talk of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness while also griping (lower stage) against Britain and its inequitable treatment of the colonists.

At the lowest tribal level, men break down relationships to others and angrily seek to destroy. There are a few franchisees that come to mind of wanting to storm the castle and burn down the house brand. Those feelings are powerfully motivating.

When a tribe is challenged, good leaders help the tribe and its individuals rise.
