Gold’s Gym Closing in Hawaii
Gold’s Gym, highly respected among serious body builders, will be closing its last location in Hawaii at the end of the month. The corporate facility in Honolulu has arranged to transfer its 1,500 members to Powerhouse Gym, which is a few blocks away.
There were five Gold’s Gyms in Hawaii in 2004, but four, one on the island of Kauai and three on the island of Maui, have since been closed by its franchisee.
The Irving, Texas-based company has 620 gyms in 42 states and 30 countries. It opened 62 new facilities in 2007 and at the time said it had more than 150 gyms, both corporate and franchised, in the development stage for 2008.
Last November the company was seeking expansion in Hawaii through franchising, including a takeover of the Honolulu site.
