Harry Frankfurt on Truth, Lying and Just Not Caring About the Difference

michael webster's picture

Harry Frankfurt wrote an influential article about bullshit, being entirely agnostic with respect to whether you are speaking the truth or lying. Frankfurter argues that being negligent about truth or falsity is necessary for the marketing, and are bullshitter's are even worse than liars.

Unfortunately, there is presently no cause of action against bullshitters, a cause of action uniquely required for the franchise world.

for me to become convinced that this was not an old Monte Python bit. It would be a great one btw.

Interesting point about liars being restricted but BSers having the full field to play on. It raises questions about unsupported opinions crossing into the area of BS. Is it the degree of conviction that takes something from chatter into the world of BS?
