How does your state rank in the “New Economy”?
A ranking of U.S. states on how well they generate innovation puts Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington and California at the top the list, according to a report by the Kauffman Foundation, a Kansas City nonprofit that researches and promotes entrepreneurship, and the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation.
The study compares states on 26 indicators in five categories: knowledge jobs, globalization, economic dynamism, transformation to the digital economy and technological innovation capacity. At the bottom of the list were West Virginia, South Dakota, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama.
The report concludes: "The keys to success in the new economy now and in the future appear clear: supporting a knowledge infrastructure -- world-class education and training; spurring innovation -- indirectly through universities and directly by helping companies; and encouraging entrepreneurship."
