Laffit Pincay Didn't Ride DONKEYS!

Laffit Pincay the winningest jockey of all time, the Tiger Woods of horse racing, didn’t ride donkeys, but rather thoroughbreds with a high probability of allowing him the opportunity to win.  Owners and trainers would carefully select Pincay to ride their horse to victory; however Pincay only agreed to ride those horses which provided him with the best opportunity to win. In horse racing there is often very little difference between the winning time of the first place horse and that of the first loser (2nd Place).  Even if you’ve never been to a horse race you’ve heard the caller calling the race as the hooves of the horse’s pound the ground down the straight away and across the finish line.  By how much does the winning horse invariably win?  You know the answer…by a nose.  The winning combination of horse and jockey were just a tiny bit, just a fraction of a second better than that of the second place duo.  However, the purse for the 1st place horse was 10 times that of the second place horse.

If you want to succeed as a franchisee, you can’t ride a donkey and you must be just as diligent in paring up with the right horse/Franchisor.  After all this is the horse that you hope to ride across the finish line, in record time, for record profits.  To be successful there must be the correct fit between the franchisee and franchisor.  Just because a franchisor has enjoyed tremendous success, does not in and of it self translate into you enjoying the same level of success.  Just as there must be a good fit, between horse and jockey, there must be a good fit between franchisee and franchisor.  Your due diligence can not end with the determination that a particular franchise system offers a good track record, good systems, and a good product.  You must look at how well you and the franchisor will work together.  How easily will you be able to adopt the franchisors proprietary way of doing business?  Will the concept provide you with the lifestyle which you’re looking to maintain or grow into?  Are you going to be happy in owning and operating a business that flips burgers, scoops ice cream or cleans offices?

To win in franchising as a franchisee, you can not simply try and pick the horse that you think is the best.  You must pick the horse that is the best for you, the horse that gives you the best opportunity to win.  There may be just be the smallest difference in fit between you and various franchisors, however that little bit of difference can be an enormous difference in not just crossing the finish line, but in crossing first and winning the most!
