LDS Church in Negotiations To Become Marriott Hotel Franchisee
Hawaii Reserves, Inc., a business arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church), is seeking to replace the church's aging Laie Inn on Oahu’s North Shore with a new hotel. Hawaii Reserves, Inc. is presently negotiating with Marriott International, Inc. to operate the new hotel as a franchise. It hopes to break ground during the first quarter of next year.
The North Shore is an area of Oahu that still retains much of its natural beauty, in contrast to Waikiki, on the same island, which is part of the city of Honolulu. Waikiki (and Honolulu itself) has changed drastically in the last 50 years to have a definite modern big city look, although on a great beach. Waikiki is appreciated by visitors who enjoy having the conveniences of a big city, but many of them really enjoy going to the North Shore, an hour’s drive away, and spending some time there.
