Many McDonald's franchise restaurants customarily close on Thanksgiving and Christmas. But buoyed by a successful Thanksgiving Day when many franchisees opened their doors, McDonald's is pushing franchise owners to likewise be open for business on Christmas Day.
Ad Age obtained an internal memo written by McDonald's USA COO Jim Johannesen, in which he wrote that the biggest opportunity for the system is Christmas Day. Average sales for company-owned restaurants, which comprise 10 percent of its system, averaged more than $6,000 each on Thanksgiving, he stated.
If all 14,000 U.S. locations open on Christmas and do equally as well as the Thanksgiving figure, the total would be more than $84 million.
However, Ad Age doesn't think that's likely to happen. But even if only a few thousand were to open, that would still be a significant contribution.
