This timeline of key events provides a short and interesting look at Panera Bread's 36-year history, from the time Ron Shaich and his father bought 60 percent of Louis Kane's debt-ridden Au Bain Pain in 1981 to yesterday, when the announcement was made that JAB was purchasing Panera for $315 a share in a transaction valued at approximately $7.5 billion, including the assumption of about $340 million in net debt. The deal, which will take the company private, had the unanimous blessing of the Panera board, led by an enthusiastic CEO and chairman Shaich.
