What's Hot in San Diego?

We want to welcome a new member, MyKulbee. In his "about me " section, he asks what franchise concept would be right for San Diego.

Any advice for him?

There are many franchisers that want to expand units in SoCal so let me narrow the possibilities down slightly by asking --  MyKulbee, do you know what kind of franchise business you are interested in? E.g. fast food, business services, retail, hotel or something else?

First Things First

Here's my two cents. Aint no substitute for due diligence. My old college prof, to the north at UCLA, exhorted our entrepreneur class to scour the local business news magazines for opportunities. We had to train ourselves.

San Diego Business Journal comes to mind.

Franchise consultants know individual markets, and they can help explain where the opportunities are and why. That can help jump start one's thinking of opportunities.

Here's what I'd consider:

  • Size of the market. Ask the franchise organizations you are working with for base population or SMEs for a business service franchise
  • Is there a regional support center? Is it close by any of the places you are considering?
  • Find a local franchise broker / consultant for Northern California and another for Southern California to get an idea of what market offers a better matching opportunity for you
  • Get familiar with the local business trends and what restaurant chains are aggressively developing what area.

That's my two cents worth.

Craig
