Advantage of Grocery Stores over Restaurants

When a new law was passed in France that required all restaurants to provide doggy bags to customers who want to take their leftovers home I yawned. I did not give it much thought until my inbox was filled with questions about food waste, discarding of old and outdated food.

The new law in France took effect as of January 1, 2016, and it states that all restaurants that serve more than 180 meals a day will have to provide doggy bags to customers who want to take leftover food home with them.

In the U.S. taking food home from a restaurant is common practice, but not so in France. So why the law?  In fact they estimated 7.7 tons of restaurant food is wasted in France every year.

The United States throws away one-third of all the food it produces — 133 billion pounds of food. And grocery stores are responsible for tossing 10 percent of that food. In an effort not to waste food more and more chefs are working within the grocery sector in Europe creating daily special with fresh fruit, produce, and other perishables that are nearing expiration date creating daily specials.  In the case of the fruit also nearing peak flavor they have become a traffic driver.

The ability for a grocery retailer to highlight ready-2-eat and heat-n-eat fresh prepared food created from what at one time would have been rotated into waste is a built in advantage.  Consumer awareness of food waste is a growing undercurrent of popular culture.  One successful outcome is that meal kits continue to gain favor.
