Early Franchisee's Long John Silver's Story

Richard Levitt, 84, became a Long John Silver's franchisee along with his brother-in-law Ed Glazer 41 years ago. Eventually he and his family owned 31 units that did quite well. Their fortunes took a turn for the worse in recent years, and a couple of weeks ago the family had to start taking steps to close 16 of the restaurants.

What happened?

There were ups and downs, but no serious problems until the owner, Yum Brands Inc., which also owns such popular chains as KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, decided to divest and sell the Long John Silver’s franchise operation to a private equity group in 2011. —Dave Elbert, Business Record
