Franchisors With Earnings Claims

"Why don't you advise franchisee candidates to ONLY CONSIDER franchisors who provide such a claim? But PLEASE, also inform, educate and advise, that an EARNINGS CLAIM IS NOT A GUARANTEE otherwise, your cure will be far worse than the illness! That's my 2-Cents!" - FranSynergy

That's a great suggestion. So, I am asking our esteemed members to share franchisors who list their earnings claims in their UFOC (see Item 19 in the UFOC). Although it is no guarantee of success, at least a franchise buyer can begin to make an informed decision on return on investment instead of just relying on hear-say and antecdotal information.

DEAR READER, EVERYTIME YOU SEE AN EARNINGS CLAIM IN A UFOC, PLEASE LIST THE FRANCHISOR HERE WITH CORROBORATING EVIDENCE.

Thanks to JD for finding this site. UFOCs.com list 317 franchisors who supply earnings claims. Their names are listed below. You can go to their website to purchase each UFOC.

Baskin-Robbins Offers Item 19 Earnings Claims

DEAR READER, EVERYTIME YOU SEE AN EARNINGS CLAIM IN A UFOC, PLEASE LIST THE FRANCHISOR HERE.

I am asking our esteemed members to share franchisors who list their earnings claims in their UFOC (see Item 19 in the UFOC). Although it is no guarantee of success, at least a franchise buyer can begin to make an informed decision on return on investment instead of just relying on hear-say and antecdotal information. I'll keep the forum header on top updated.

Let me get the ball rolling. I'm not a franchise broker / consultant so my information is limited. But here goes...

Bond's Franchise Guide says Baskin-Robbins has an earnings claim.

More Earnings Claims!

Increasing Number of Franchise Systems Provide “Earnings Claims” to Franchise Candidates

Here's a little "Teaser" about earnings claims written by Bret Lowell, CFE Partner, DLA Piper US LLP

However, a careful analysis of the franchisors who are making earnings claims reveals some important trends:

•   Nearly 500 – or 18.3 percent of all active franchise systems – make earnings claims.•   Setting aside the many new franchise concepts that have entered the market in the past few years, the percent is even greater (24.4 percent)

Characteristics of Franchise Systems That Make Earnings ClaimsA number of franchise sectors are well above the 20 percent mark, including the lodging industry (63%), Baked Goods (32%), Printing (28%), Full Service Restaurants (24%), Retail Food (20%) and Child-related franchises (23%).

AND FOR THOSE THAT DON'T.... Here's a good article from Kim Ellis of Bison.com,  from which you might find the Best Bit of Advice to be as Kim writes:

The bottom line is that buying a business is a bit of a risk and the best answer to “How much money can I make?” as I mentioned in the beginning, is “It varies.” Choosing a great company with superior training, support and marketing coupled with your own determination to succeed are also strong indicators of what kind of success you’ll have as a franchisee.

Is it really that easy to just buy a UFOC before one invests?

You mean a prospective franchise buyer has easy access to UFOC information from not only Caleasi for free, FRANData for small fee, but also UFOCs.com for a small fee?

Is it really that easy to begin one's due diligence? I had no idea since the rants I read on this forum would lead one to believe that it is impossible to perform diligent due diligence.

I guess you live and learn!

Franchisors With Earnings Claims

I luv you guys (sniff). ufocs.com lists 317 franchisor concepts that include an earnings estimate. It cost $220 for each UFOC but I do appreciate the listing of franchisors who provide Item 19 claims.

Hmmm, here's one from UFOCs.com that caught my eye of colorful franchisors. If it is what I'm thinking, I hope the franchise has a robust fuzz detection system.

Earnings Claims

Before you take the term Earnings Claims as simply what is contained in Item 19 of the UFOC, you need to appreciate all the other information that is provided that is an earnings claim, but called by some other name or arranged to look like it doesn't really come from the franchisor. Item 19, with its bozo disclaimers that there are no other earnings claims provided, has become a game that you need to learn how to play. Don't just take the words at their face meanings and think you know what you are being told.

Earnings Claims in Relationship to failed 1st-generation

Perhaps you would like to explain, JD, the relationship of earnings claims to the failure of ZORS to provide ZOR-known statistics as to the success or failure of the first=generation franchisees who provide the capital and the labor to build the units that merely rent the Brand Name.

Richard Solomon indicates that franchisees do not understand how to interpret Item 19.

Thanks for the list of those that do furnish earnings claims. We notice that MBE-UPS is missing because, of course, there are no earnings for most of their franchisees. But, we notice that CSC and Quiznos is on the list ----both experts in "con" and the "art of the deal."

Thanks to BS, Dale, FranSynergy, Inc. "Proof of the Pudding"

Just more of the same PR and propaganda for franchising that minimizes the risk and tries to explain Item 20 and the value? of talking to franchisees, etc...

Lots of understatement like the "bit of a risk" remark and no outright lies but illustrative of the cooperation of business journals and publications to assist the franchisors in hiding the know statistical failure and success of their first-generation franchisees. The success/failure rate of the first-generation franchisees is the proof of the pudding but nobody wants to talk about the pudding.

The usual suggested variable are always put out there; i.e. poor location and poor management by the ZEE, etc... but the variable of the flawed and unviable business plan, that is not unviable for the franchisor, is never mentioned.

Disgusting public policy and disgusting status quo!

Anyone notice that the #5 franchise MBE/UPS STORE (entrepenur)is not listed for earnings claims. THAT'S BECAUSE THERE ARE NO EARNINGS IN THAT FRANCHISE!

Item 20 Ranter tell us...

Since you are on the Item 20 list in The UPS Store UFOC what do you say when propective franchisees call you about The UPS Store franchise opportunity?

Posted by Truth in Franchising on September 10th, 2007

California is the great hope of franchisees

California, the most diversified State in the Union, and one of the most democratic states in the Union, has always been in the forefront of protection of democracy in the law.

We have to thank them for their free UFOC's and for not hiding their light from those who are so often put "over a barrel with no bung hole."

on September 10th, 2007

Not on Item 20 List Yet

Not on that List yet, TIF. Worked to preserve our rights to give them an earful!

on September 10th, 2007

Did The UPS Store not update its UFOC Item 20 properly?

You of course know that The UPS Store is required to provide a current and up-to-date UFOC to prospects. I can't imagine they would not be in compliance.
