Pizza Hut In as NFL Sponsor, Papa John's Out

When Papa John's founder John Schnatter publicly expressed his displeasure at what he said was the NFL's inept handling of player protests, the brand immediately faced highly publicized negative reaction. Four months later, Schnatter has not only stepped down as CEO, but Papa John's has relinquished its role as the NFL's official pizza sponsor, with Pizza Hut stepping in to take up the slack.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced in a statement on Wednesday that Pizza Hut would be their new sponsor, right after Louisville-based Papa John's executives acknowledged "missteps" in their relationship with the football league causing them to resign the account.

"We know many of our fans enjoy pizza while watching NFL games and we are thrilled to have Pizza Hut, an industry leader and one of America's favorite brands, as an official league sponsor," Goodell said a statement. "With a focus on family, friends and fun, Pizza Hut has the creativity we are looking for in a partner and we look forward to working together with them to make the at-home NFL experience more exciting than ever for our fans." — Thomas Novelly, Louisville Courier Journal
